TMS TREATMENT

A different approach when traditional treatment hasn't been enough.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain. At BNI Clinics, TMS is considered as part of an individualized treatment plan following a psychiatric evaluation.

UNDERSTANDING TMS

What is transcranial magnetic stimulation?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses a magnetic coil to deliver pulses to specific areas of the brain. The treatment is performed while you are awake and seated, and does not require anesthesia or surgery.

WHEN TMS MAY BE CONSIDERED

When other approaches haven't provided enough relief

TMS may be considered when symptoms have not improved enough with other approaches, including medication or psychotherapy. Whether it is appropriate depends on your diagnosis, treatment history, and individual circumstances.

Treatment-resistant depression

TMS is commonly considered for depression that has not improved adequately with other treatments.

OCD

TMS may also be considered for obsessive-compulsive disorder in appropriate cases.

Other conditions

TMS is being studied and used in other clinical settings. Your psychiatrist can discuss whether it may be appropriate for you.

HOW IT WORKS

What happens during TMS?

Position

You sit comfortably in a treatment chair while the TMS coil is positioned against your head.

Stimulate

The coil delivers controlled magnetic pulses to a targeted area of the brain.

Continue

You remain awake during treatment and can leave the clinic after your session.

WHY TMS

Benefits of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

TMS offers a non-invasive treatment option for people who may not have found sufficient relief from other approaches. Treatment is provided in an outpatient setting and does not require anesthesia or surgery.

Non-Invasive Treatment

TMS uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain. Unlike surgical brain stimulation, it does not require incisions, implants, or anesthesia.

No Recovery Period

Most people can return to their usual activities after a treatment session. TMS is provided on an outpatient basis, allowing treatment to fit into a regular daily routine.

An Option When Other Treatments Haven’t Helped

TMS may be considered when depression has not improved sufficiently with medications or psychotherapy. A psychiatric evaluation helps determine whether it is an appropriate treatment option.

Generally Well Tolerated

TMS is generally well tolerated. Some people experience temporary scalp discomfort or headache, particularly during the early sessions.

Evidence-Based Treatment

TMS has been studied extensively for depression and is an FDA-approved treatment for several conditions. Your clinician will review your history and treatment goals to determine whether TMS is appropriate for you.

TMS AT BNI CLINICS

A Personalized Approach to TMS Treatment

TMS is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. At BNI Clinics, we begin by understanding your symptoms, treatment history, and individual needs before determining whether TMS is an appropriate option. Our approach combines clinical expertise, evidence-based treatment, and ongoing evaluation throughout your care.

Comprehensive Evaluation

Before beginning TMS, your clinician reviews your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, and current goals. This helps determine whether TMS is an appropriate treatment option for you.

Individualized Treatment

Your treatment plan is developed around your individual needs and clinical circumstances. Treatment parameters and the course of care are determined by your clinical team rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

Ongoing Clinical Support

Your response to treatment is monitored throughout the course of TMS. Your care team can review your progress and adjust the treatment plan when appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some of the questions we hear most often.

How long is a TMS session?

Your first appointment is a chance to talk through what you’ve been experiencing, your history, and what you’ve already tried. Your doctor will take the time to understand the bigger picture and discuss what may make sense next.
